When you buy or sell a used vehicle, one step that most people delay — and regret later — is the RC Transfer. The Registration Certificate (RC) is the official proof of who owns a vehicle. Until you transfer it to the new owner's name, you are still legally responsible for that vehicle.

Why You Cannot Skip This
Under Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the new owner must transfer the RC within 30 days of purchase. If they don't:
- Any traffic challans generated will come to the original owner
- If the vehicle is involved in an accident, the old owner may face legal trouble
- The vehicle cannot be re-sold easily without a clean RC
- The new owner cannot claim insurance as the registered owner

Step-by-Step Process
Step 1 — Clear the Loan (if any)
If the vehicle was purchased on loan and the loan is not fully paid, you need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the bank in Form 28. Banks usually take 7–10 working days to issue this after the final payment.
Step 2 — Fill Forms 29 and 30
The seller fills Form 29 and the buyer fills Form 30. Both forms are available on the Parivahan portal or at any RTO. Get them signed properly. Some states require notarisation.
Step 3 — Submit at the RTO
Take all documents to the RTO where the vehicle is registered. If you have bought the vehicle from a different state, you first need an NOC from that state's RTO before registering it in your state.
Step 4 — Pay the Transfer Fee
Fees vary by state and vehicle type:

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying in cash without a bill: Always get a sale deed or purchase invoice — it is the legal proof of the sale date and price.
- Not checking for existing challans: Before buying, check if the vehicle has pending challans on the eChallan portal. These become your responsibility after transfer.
- Ignoring the 30-day limit: Even if you face delays, submit the application before 30 days and get the acknowledgement receipt as proof.
- Buying without insurance: The vehicle must have valid insurance at all times. Get it transferred or take a new policy on the day of purchase.
